- Language barriers have been demonstrated to have adverse effects on patient and provider satisfaction, and on patient health outcomes. In the absence of culture-specific translations and due to stigma, these individuals may have difficulty describing their health conditions or symptoms, which often leads to misdiagnosis, medication errors and complications, and even death.

- English Language Learners (ELL), or emergent bilinguals, experience difficulties in understanding content due to the disproportionate relation between the language used in the classroom and the language of which they have full command. Besides, Spanish-speaking parents are not typically familiar with the U.S. educational system and have difficulty understanding their children’s performance. This impacts the quality of education, which in turn impacts the children’s future, and the school’s performance scores.
